shocking 2009

by kah-yoong

2009 was a big shock to us. Minutes before midnight, dad collapsed at the new TV3 season roof top parking (excellent view of the fireworks display and very little crowd, barely 100 people). Earlier that evening he had a stomach upset, and not wanting to disappoint my mom to usher the new year, he tagged along for the countdown and fireworks display at One Utama. Probably due to the exhaustion and strain to the blood sugar level after a purge, he lost consciousness. I was able to grab him in time and lay him on the ground which he later regain consciousness.
It barely took me 5 minutes to get the car parked at level 4 to the place he’s lying and there’s already a crowd around him (you know la, malaysians) and there was Ben a kind samaritan who’s giving aid to my dad and also a squad of security personnel making sure that my dad gets enough room and also fanning him with a newspaper for better ventilation.
When dad is able to walk, we moved him to the car and drove off under the escort of One Utama security 2 wheeler all the way to the exit.

Ben, I’m so sorry if i did not thank you that night. The only thing I was in my mind is my dad. Thank you so much for being there. I’ve made a thank you note through The Star editorial, I’m still waiting for it to be published.

And also to One Utama Security Personnel. Thank you.

Yes, I know I have ugly handwriting and grammatically handicap without a spellchecker.

It’s good to know that good Samaritans still exist - not easy to come by these days.

I hope your Dad is in good health right now.

Something similar happened to my family on that particular night. Only, here it was my Mom. She had to struggle with a critical hypocalcemia attack. I’m still shaken remembering it… and I’m so glad we have been given more time.
